Children’s Mental Health Service Expo at Local Malls
Waterloo, April 25, 2016 - Parenting a child who is struggling with a mental illness can be very challenging. Fortunately, Waterloo Region has many agencies that offer services to help children, youth and their families learn how to cope. Twelve of these agencies will be at the Cambridge Centre and Conestoga Malls on Saturdays April 30 and May 7 respectively as part of the AHA! Wellness Works exposition.
“Unfortunately the stigma of having a mental health concern still has too much power,” said Chris Sellers, spokesperson for Lutherwood. “However, that stigma will wither as we learn more about children’s mental health, what services are available and how to access those services. The expo is a great opportunity for parents and guardians to do just that, and learn how they can find out more about any concerns they might have about their child.”
As well as learning about mental health supports in our schools and community, mall visitors may also:
- Send a message of hope to a child who is struggling
- Learn about the Be Safe app that offers support and resources for youth
- Meet Martin Bauman who is cycling across Canada in support of mental health
The expo is being coordinated by Lutherwood along with Canadian Mental Health Association - WWD, Camino Family and Community Services, KW Counselling Services, Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board. Other participating agencies include:
- Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud
- Family Counselling Centre of Cambridge and North Dumfries
- Front Door
- Mental Health and Addictions Nurses
- Ray of Hope
- St. Mary’s Counselling
Lutherwood is a not-for-profit health and social service organization that supports youth with mental health issues, people at risk of being homeless, workers looking for employment and families in need of counselling. Its services are accessed by more than 15,500 people annually in Waterloo Region and Wellington County.
