Waterloo, July 31, 2018: The Home Depot’s Kitchener West and Waterloo stores have supported Waterloo Region youth for five years and through their Orange Door Project fundraising campaign have collectively raised more than $135,000 for Safe Haven Shelter.

In June, the two local stores constructed very creative displays to attract the attention of their in-store customers and they invited customers to purchase a “paper door” for $2 at the checkout. This year, The Home Depot and its customers raised $15,000 to help prevent youth homelessness in Waterloo Region.

“We are so fortunate to have such helpful and community-minded teams at The Home Depot Waterloo and Kitchener West,” said Donna Buchan, Executive Director, Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation. “They truly believe in supporting the community. Not only have they raised funds to support local youth at Safe Haven, but Team Depot has also brought teams of volunteers to do hard work at both Safe Haven and our Children’s Mental Health Centre in Waterloo. They go above and beyond and we are very thankful for the continual support and partnership.”

Lutherwood’s Safe Haven Shelter helps children who are experiencing conflict, family breakdown, abusive relationships, poverty, conflicts with the law, addiction issues and struggles with their mental health. Each year, Safe Haven helps more than 500 children between the ages of 12 to 18 find safety, shelter and support. At any time of the day or night, a child can knock on the door and ask for a safe place to sleep, eat and receive counselling to help them find a better direction in their life.

The Orange Door Project was established by The Home Depot Canada Foundation with the goal of eliminating youth homelessness in Canada. One hundred eighty-two Home Depot Canada stores took part in this year’s campaign by selling paper orange doors in-store, and by rolling up their sleeves to help local charities complete renovation projects.

Lutherwood is a not-for-profit health and social service organization that supports youth with mental health issues, workers looking for employment and people at risk of being homeless. It also operates Safe Haven Shelter. Its services are accessed by more than 15,000 people annually in Waterloo Region and Wellington County.
