Stantec honoured for Children’s Mental Health Centre design

Toronto, ON (April 17, 2012) – Stantec has captured an Honourable Mention in the prestigious Behavioral Healthcare Design Showcase for 2012 for the firm’s new expansion of the Lutherwood Children’s Mental Health Centre.

Now entering its fourth year, the Behavioural Healthcare Design Showcase is a compilation of state-of-the-art architectural and interior design projects from firms that have achieved outstanding and innovative design solutions in new or renovated health and human service facilities.

The expansion of the Lutherwood Children’s Mental Health Centre’s Benjamin Road location was a transformative project. It included the incorporation of a new 16,500 square foot addition into the original buildings, which were developed between the 1960’s and the 1980’s.

“The original buildings were ill-suited for modern treatment approaches,” says Barbara Miszkiel, the principal in charge and key design architect for the Lutherwood expansion. “The new addition is better in line with Lutherwood’s philosophical approach to care: It is welcoming, filled with natural light and it focuses on the reduction of client anxiety and normalization of mental health treatment.”

The new design includes a double-height gathering space which links the overall complex and acts as its new heart. A new interior street provides a transition from public space, for events such as community gatherings, school graduation, movies nights, and informal recreation, to the semi-public and private spaces for art and music therapy, classrooms and counseling.

The newly expanded Lutherwood embraces recovery through a design that respects the individual, staff, family, visitors and community, says Miszkiel, all critical participants in a client’s journey toward a satisfying, productive life.
