In the summer of 2022, local Indigenous Artist Alanah Astehtsi Otsistohkwa (Morningstar) Jewel and Luke Swinson designed and painted a mural in Lutherwood’s child-friendly CAPP space in Kitchener where families can foster connection.

In recognition of Newcomer Career Month, our Guelph Newcomer Career Services team is working to make a difference in providing more opportunities in the community.

Keiden had recently graduated high school and was ready to jump into his career. After being introduced to the skilled trades in his shop class and learning about his uncle’s career as an Electrician, Keiden felt inspired and wanted to follow in his footsteps. To find out where to start, he contacted Lutherwood’s Employment Services.

After years of struggling with mental health, addiction and run-ins with the law, Tim was ready to get his life back on track. He had been homeless for five years when he found his way to Lutherwood’s Housing Services, where he was assigned a Service Navigator and added to the list for emergency housing.

Emily was looking for a career change. She was working in retail when she realized that it wasn’t the best fit for her. “I wanted a change because I wanted to gain more skills and experience working in an office environment” Emily shared. She started applying for administrative positions which led to quite a few interviews. “Unfortunately, I never got hired.” She added.

Finding a fulfilling job is never an easy task, and when you have a disability, it can be even harder. Living with anxiety and depression since he was a teenager, Luke struggled to build up his resume and confidence as a young adult.
